How to Report Human Trafficking: 1-888-3737-888 Cases of human trafficking have been reported in all 50 states and in a variety of environments, including: legal and illegal settings; cities, suburbs, and rural areas; and wealthy and low income areas. Often, community members come across labor and sex trafficking situations in their day-to-day routines.
Raising public awareness about how to recognize and report a potential trafficking case to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) Hotline is essential. Most victims do not self-identify as victims or are not aware that help is available. By taking action and calling the NHTRC Hotline – and encouraging others to do so - you can provide crucial information about a trafficking case. As a result, more victims will receive help. What is the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) Hotline? The NHTRC Hotline is a 24-hour, 7 day a week, toll-free hotline. The Hotline number is 1-888-3737-888. NHTRC Call Specialists can connect victims with law enforcement and social service providers in their local area who can help them get out of exploitative situations and into safe environments where they have access to services, such as emotional support, health care, and legal services.

Additional Resources Other Opportunities to Raise Awareness About Human Trafficking in Your Community Start a book club. Pick up books about human trafficking then meet and discuss the book and the issue and the ways that your group can help fight human trafficking in your area and in the country. Good books on this topic include: The Girl Who Played with Fire, Half the Sky, The Johns, Children in the Game, and A Sacred Bath.
Fundraising dinner. Instead of going out to restaurants, host potluck dinners with your friends, family, neighbors, and peers. It will give you an opportunity to spread the word about human trafficking as well as spend time with friends and meet new people. On the invitations you can include information about a human trafficking organization, along with a “suggested donation”. Or, if you make the dinner yourself, then you can charge per person and the proceeds can be donated to a human trafficking organization of your choosing!
Reach the education system. Are you a teacher, volunteer parent, or PTA member? It is important that we educate youth about the reality of human trafficking. We can also take this opportunity to have students, as well as teachers and faculty members, write to their legislators about the importance of putting an end to human trafficking.
Girls’ night in. Host a girls’ night in where you can talk about the issue and how it affects your community, city, and the US as a whole. Then, come up with ways that you can combat human trafficking in your area. You can also host a wine night or a beauty night (contact MaryKay or Avon for information about hosting beauty nights), where you can suggest that the ladies donate to an organization that fights human trafficking in your area or in the US.
Clothes for a cause. Host a fashion show and put together a clothing drive for victims of trafficking. Collect clothes from your community at schools, community centers, religious centers, etc.
Plan a movie night. Whether it’s at your house or at an actual theater, movies are a great way to spread the word and educate others about human trafficking. Great movies about human trafficking include: Very Young Girls, Call & Response, and Taken. Remember that many of these movies are graphic so keep in mind the audience that you plan to invite. You can also host the movie night at a larger location (you’ll need a projector) so that you can invite more people. Or if you really want to go big, contact your local movie theater to see how you can plan a movie night for charity where the proceeds would go to an organization in your area.
